Mini Implants

A very important aspect of orthodontic treatment is controlling which teeth move and which teeth remain in place. A tooth is usually moved by applying a force with an elastic or spring which also attaches to another tooth. Sometimes both teeth are allowed to move towards each other, but one of the teeth is often expected to stay in place, and this is called an anchor tooth. Some type of auxilliary device has to be used to help keep the anchor tooth stable, and most anchorage devices are less than 100% successful. The headgear is worn at night to place a force on the anchor teeth to keep them from moving, and it has been considered the most effective conventional anchorage device.

Mini-implants have become popular in recent years and are very effective anchorage devices. They are very small titanium screws which are placed into the bone supporting the teeth and are used to control tooth movements. They are commonly called Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADS). Patients usually report that it is not painful to have TADS placed. TADS are very effective at holding anchor teeth in place, and they can be substituted for headgears. They are especially useful for adults, but Dr. Rushing rarely uses them for young patients.
