Metal Braces

The standard braces today are very different from those years ago when a metal band with a welded bracket had to be placed around each tooth. Today we place the metal bands only on the back molars while metal brackets are attached to the rest of the  teeth with a special composite adhesive. Therefore the process of having braces placed today is essentially painless. The brackets are smaller and streamlined and are much more comfortable than they were years ago. The brackets are made of high grade stainless steel, and we also have titanium brackets available if there is a nickel allergy. Brackets can be considered specialized handles that are placed on the teeth which allow individual teeth to be moved in any direction. Archwires run through the brackets and are attached by tiny wires or elastics. The elastics can be clear or silver to blend with the brackets, or they can be of many different colors.

Dr. Rushing personally places all brackets and bands onto the teeth of every patient because accurate placement is essential for excellent orthodontic results. Archwires fit into the brackets and are adjusted as needed to move the teeth into proper alignment. For an excellent result, it is essential to move the roots of the teeth within the bone as well as moving the crowns of the teeth. Brackets are very efficient for aligning the roots whereas root movement is very difficult with removable appliances. We use metal brackets for most patients because they are strong, durable and efficient, and because they can provide precise tooth movement in any direction.
