WHY CHOOSE AN ORTHODONTIST FOR BRACES?

Orthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the diagnosis, supervision, guidance and correction of malocclusions. It was established as the first specialty of dentistry in the year 1900, by the American Dental Association. The formal name of the specialty is now Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

An orthodontist is required to complete college requirements, graduate from an accredited dental school and successfully complete at least two years of full-time specialty training at an accredited orthodontic postgraduate program. Only those who have completed these educational requirements may call themselves orthodontists. Only orthodontic specialists may become members of the American Association of Orthodontists. The Mississippi State Dental Practice Act allows licensed dentists to perform orthodontic treatment without specifying any educational requirements. It is simply up to the dentists themselves to decide if they are qualified. However, dentists cannot legally state that they are orthodontists unless they have properly accredited  specialty training.  The law does allow dentists to advertise that they offer braces or orthodontic treatment, and they can even state that they have received orthodontic training. They are only prohibited from identifying themselves as orthodontists.

WHAT IS A BOARD CERTIFIED ORTHODONTIST?

After graduating from accredited orthodontic postgraduate programs orthodontists are eligible to become Board Certified through the voluntary examination process of The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). They must pass a thorough written examination covering all aspects of orthodontics, and they must take an extensive clinical examination during which they are questioned by expert examiners of the ABO. The orthodontists also have to present the records of numerous patients they have treated, and the examiners thoroughly question them  about all aspects of the cases. Upon satisfactorily completing the examinations the orthodontists become Board Certified and are designated Diplomates of The American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Rushing became Board Certified in 1983, and, as of  2012, there are only two Board Certified orthodontists in the Jackson metro area.

Click ABO for more information.

The use of the term certified can be misleading. For example a Certified Invisalign Provider is a dentist or orthodontist who has simply received a few hours of training by the company that makes Invisalign products. These dentists and orthodontists are not Board Certified.
