Spacing

Parents may become concerned when their nine year old child has spaces between the front teeth, but spaces are normal at this age and orthodontic treatment is not necessarily required. However, if the spacing is excessive, it may be necessary to move the incisors together because they may prevent the adjacent teeth from erupting properly. If the upper incisors have large spaces because they are protruding excessively, it may be advisable to retract them to reduce the risk of fracturing them in an accident. Dr. Rushing does not usually recommend orthodontic treatment to close a child's spaces at this age just for esthetic reasons. He believes it is in the child's best interest to postpone the correction of minor problems unless they are likely to cause other complications.

Spacing of the teeth is a common orthodontic problem in pre-adolescent and older children, and braces are usually necessary for the correction of spacing. A child with spacing should have an orthodontic evaluation before all of the baby teeth are lost, because there are usually other problems present which are best corrected while a child is growing.
